Hunan City University is a comprehensive full-time university authorized by the Ministry of Education, which is the first university with the name of “city” in interior provinces of China.
The university is the provincial “Gardenlike Unit” and the “Civilized University of Hunan Province”. It is located in Yiyang City, which is a beautiful place lying in the middle of Hunan Province. Yiyang has picturesque scenery and a famous fame of a fertile “land of fish and rice”, it is also the hometown of Gucheng Zhou, Yang Zhou, Libo Zhou, Zi Ye. To the north of Yiyang is eight-hundred-li Dongting Lake; in the south lies the famous “Home of Beauty ” – Taohuajiang; to the west is the pearl of world landscape—Zhangjiajie; to the east is the provincial capital-Changsha. Since Changshi Railway and Luozhan Railway both join here, the transportation here is very convenient, at the same time, the old Zijiang River passes through the city and at the end flows into the Dongting Lake. The beautiful environment and profound human landscape add to the great fascination and brilliance of the university.
The university now has altogether 9445 full-time undergraduates and junior college students, 1680 students of adult continuous education. It has a teaching faculty of about 942, 539 of which are full-time teachers, including 33 professors, 209 associate professors, 5 experts who have obtained special allowance subsidized by the State Council, 6 national excellent teachers, 7 excellent teachers of Hunan Province, and 108 Doctors and Masters.
The university covers an area of 1078 mu, with a building area of 268,600 square meters, and now, it has a new requisition land of 1360 mu. It also has fixed assets valued RMB 200,000,000, of which the teaching instruments and equipments amount to more than RMB 30,000,000. Its library has a collection of 700,000 volumes, and there is a second-class station of CNKI knowledge network, two electronic reading-rooms, and some advanced teaching instruments such as electric manual experimental device, electronic universal experimental machine and so on.
The university has the following specialties of undergraduate courses, namely: City Planning, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Computer Science and Technology, Chinese Linguistic and Literature, English, Physics, Artistic Designing, Electronic Information Project, Chemical Project and Technology, Engineering of Water Supply and Drainage, Engineering Administration, Geographical Information System, Information and Computer Science, Social Physical Culture. It also has 31specialties of junior college education, such as Architectural Design, Engineering of Water Supply and Drainage, Electronic Information Technology, Music Education, Art Education. Two of them are labeled as Exemplary Specialties of Engineering Colleges by the Ministry of Education. Four of them are experimental specialties of teaching reform of the Ministry of Education, and four of them are key specialties of Hunan Educational Department. From 2004, the university has enrolled students from 22 provinces, cities and autonomous regions of China, such as Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang and so on.
The university pays a great attention to international exchange of culture and science. It invites foreign experts to teach the students here every year. In 1999, the university and Southern Sydney Institute of Australia cooperatively start a new specialty – Information Technology. It also signed an agreement of cooperatively running school with Singapore Portman Business School. At present, there are four Sino- Singapore classes in the university.
Relying on the science and technology, education, and intelligence, the university took the initiative in stepping into the main battlefield of economic construction, and by now, it has become the most active innovative base of construction and development of regional economy. It has also got some fruitful teaching and scientific researching achievements, and has successfully obtained 28 prizes awarded by Hunan Province or the Ministry of Education, including the prize of National Science Conference, the prize of National Excellent Book and so on. According to the incomplete statistics, from 1987- 2002, the university has published 227 teaching materials and monographs, and published 2871 thesis on publications of Hunan Province or the Ministry of Education, 317 of which were included by kernel periodical, 69 of which were included by some international authoritative information publications, such as SCI, CA, MK, and BI, 73 of which were employed by some digests. On the other hand, the university has 5 national and110 provincial scientific and teaching research projects. The academic journal of the university has been listed among the “100 Best Academic Journal of the Country”.
Hunan City University stresses the leitmotiv of “City”, and plans everything also around the “City”, trying to meet the need of the social development especially to the development of higher educational reform. For instance, it has been making every effort to deepen teaching reform, improving the teaching program, revising the training plan for personnel, broadening the specialized level, weakening the limit of specialty, innovating the course system, renewing the teaching content, encouraging course infiltration, strengthening complementary superiority,improving the teaching method, and enforcing the conventional administration, so as to establish the characteristic road for the personnel. By practicing and making designing, the students have improved their comprehensive qualities in the process of education, and they can adapt themselves well to the society when they graduate. The graduates are warmly welcomed by society, so they have promising prospect of employment. The employment rate of the graduates of this university reaches more than 95% of the total students for 5 years, and with this rate, the university has been in the front place among the universities of the same kind in Hunan Province. In 2000, it was awarded “Advanced Unit of Graduate Employment of National Regular Universities or Colleges” by the Ministry of Education. It also has been awarded “ Advanced Unit of Graduate Employment of Universities or Colleges in Hunan Province” for several times.
In 2004,the university plans to recruit 3600 students, including2100 undergraduates and 1500 junior college students, among whom 1000 students are from other provinces.
