Suzhou International Foreign Language School (SIFLS) was approved by the Suzhou Education Bureau and established by Dr. Steve Liang in 1995. Dr. Liang is a famous American-Chinese scholar and the Honorary board chairman of American Schiller International University. SIFLS is the first private full-time boarding school catering for students from kindergarten to Grade 12 in Suzhou. Currently there are more than 3000 students, including nearly 100 students from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas. There are more than 800 staff. SIFLS is located on the Yangcheng Lake in the northern part of Suzhou. The campus covers an area of 20 hectares, and the buildings are more than 160,000 square meters.
The school has an excellent group of teachers from all over the country. Among them there are a lot of qualified teachers with special classification, teachers with advanced training , specialist computer teachers, about 100 Chinese teachers of English ,and more than 15 foreign teachers who teach oral English.
The aim of the school is to train “ future citizens” who will meet the needs of social development, and follows the idea of modern education, namely that “Everything is for the children and enhances the children’s overall qualities.” The school takes quality education as an orientation of school values, lays emphasis on the demands of social development and the students own advancement. During their schooling, English and computer are the feature subjects. The school practises bilingual teaching (in English) from kindergarten education. For English classes, native language situational teaching methodology is implemented. Students are divided into different small classes according to their ability and levels. The small English classes attach great importance to the practical use of English—the principle of , listening and speaking first, and reading and writing second in teaching. The school possesses the first Gigabit Ethernet facility in the world. The facility is connected to the Suzhou Education City net and was upgraded in 2002 to 10M ADSL broad band. About 1000 students, from kindergarten to Grade 12, in computer classes have individual computers, and are given extensive training in computer skills. Students have won honors and awards in psychology, arts and crafts, science and technology.
The school pays great attention to extensive communication and cooperation with leading universities at home and abroad. The school has cooperative relationships with the Universities of Sunderland and Greenwich in England, the University of Queensland in Australia, and the College of Shude in Japan. The school has sent about one hundred students to overseas institutions of higher learning. For example, Xu Menglie was enrolled by McGill University that has a world-wide reputation. She got distinctions in every subject. Also, we have friendly relations with the following schools: No.107 Primary School and No.185 Middle School and Silicon Valley Alvarado School in New York and many other schools in Japan, Australia and Korea. In 2003, we established the cooperative relationship with the NABE in USA . The school has a Canadian class sponsored by the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board. Internally, SIFLS has cooperative relationships with Nanjing Foreign Language School, Shanghai Experimental School, Shanghai Xiangming Middle School, and Shanghai Dong Gezhi Middle School. Every year, the school organizes summer and winter study tours for the students to Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania.
Since its establishment eight years ago, the school has achieved many honors, such as, “Socially Recognized Successful Education Unit”, the “State Advanced Art Education Collective”, and “Best-voted Flagship School by Shanghai children”. It has also been named by the Jiangsu Psychology Institute as a “Psychology Education Experimental School”. The school was one of the first “Computerized Experimental Schools” in Suzhou, and was named by Jiangsu Province as the “Training and Function Base for information relating to the Juvenile Olympic Competition.” The school has been successful in several Olympic competitions, and subject competitions, for example, mathematics, computer educatioin, English and Chinese. Zhang Xin-xin was the best girl contestant in Jiangsu Province Information Olympics Competition; and Fengbiao won the first prize in the English Speech Contest of Suzhou. The school has witnessed many of its best successful candidates in the entrance exam to senior middle school for six years. A large batch of excellent senior middle school graduates have entered many famous universities such as Beijing University, Shanghai University of Communication, Tongji University, Jinan University etc. In 2002, the school made a new breakthrough, three senior middle school graduates Ni Di, Ji Zefei and Zhou Yunhao won prizes in the State Computer Competition. Three of the twenty-seven prize winners were from the school. These three graduates were recommended for admission to three key universities without being required to take the entrance examination. That event has created a new prospect for private schools.
