LEC was founded in August 2000 by Michelle He XiangYing and her husband Andrew
Chen KaiYuan. Natives of Henan and Hunan provinces respectively, they decided
that Shanghai was the best place to realize their dream of establishing an
English language training center founded on their own teaching philosophy and
principals. Andrew's study and teaching in Canada led him to formulate his own
theories about learning and teaching foreign languages, which formed the basis
for LEC's teaching methodology. Since its founding, LEC's success has led to
steady growth. The school presently operates at four locations: 8 in Shanghai,
and one in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. We attribute our success and reputation
to our determination to offer high-quality training at a reasonable price. We
choose our Chinese and foreign instructors carefully, and are constantly
looking for new ways in which we can improve our courses, as well as offer
innovative new approaches to English studies.
WENZHOU : Wenzhou is a medium-sized port city in Zhejiang province, 364 km (227
mi) southwest of Shanghai, 222 km (138 mi) from Ningbo. The local language is
"Wenzhounese", although most citizens speak Mandarin as a second language. The
local cuisine is known for its seafood dishes. Wenzhou has been designated a
Special Economic Zone, and features a substantial manufacturing base which,
together with a flourishing shipping trade, has resulted in rapid
modernization, allowing the city's residents to enjoy a high standard of
living. Downtown Wenzhou is a bustling, thriving commercial district crowded
with modern stores interspersed with new high-rises. Old-fashioned handcarts
and tricycles now compete for street space with droves of French automobiles
and modern American buses. Many Wenzhounese are now sending their young to
study abroad. A dearth of English language schools in the area has led many to
send their kids as far away as Hangzhou and Shanghai for training. LEC hopes to
fill this gap by providing local, high-quality English language instruction.
